Meditation, breathwork, EFT tapping (like I’m doing here) are all amazing tools to help regulate your nervous system. We spend so much time in our lives in a sympathetic state - “fight or flight” - where the body prioritizes survival over digestion, immune function, and your ability to heal. When we spend more time in a parasympathetic state, we signal to the brain, “we’re safe” - there’s no tiger chasing you, or deadline approaching (because your body doesn’t understand the difference). And all the “nice to have” functions of your body can resume - healthy digestion, good gut motility, healthy sex hormones and libido, beautiful skin, hair and nails. All the processes that weren’t “important” to your survival body, these are the things we want the most! So don’t skip this part! You can take all the supplements in the world, and follow your food plan to a T, and STILL not feel better if you skip over this step.

Mmm, how about no? There’s SO much you can do to take charge of your health. And yes, you can also use prescriptions when necessary. This isn’t black and white, this or that, this is real life. As a functional practitioner who was trained in conventional medicine, I can see both the benefits and drawbacks to both conventional and functional medicine. They’re both important pieces of the puzzle. So if you’re looking at your “normal labs” from your conventional practitioner and wondering, “how is that even possible, I feel like garbage?!?” - there’s more to the story.

Self care comes in many forms and is necessary for overall health and wellbeing. I get it. We are all busy as moms, as boss babes, as community leaders. We have so much on our plate we don’t even have time to use the bathroom when we want. But guess what, this is why we need self care even more. And it doesn’t always have to look like this.
Self care is everything from relaxation and pampering to exercise, meditation, date nights, therapy, and making a nutritious meal for yourself. You can’t serve others and be your best self until you treat yourself with the love and care you deserve. Self care is a form of self love. And guess what? It also shows your children and others around you a great example of a woman who can handle anything but also treats herself with respect and love.

Don’t shoot the messenger! Everyone wants to blame sex hormones for their symptoms, but the cause(s) are likely upstream. The first things to address would be to sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise and thyroid health. Hormones like cortisol, insulin, oxytocin, melatonin and thyroid hormones all trump whatever is going on with estrogen and your other sex hormones. Focusing on taking care of the major upstream hormones will generally balance out your sex hormones and your symptoms will resolve. If you’ve done all that work and you’re still symptomatic, then let’s check! So before you think about supplementing your sex hormones because you think there’s something wrong, address your sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise and thyroid. That’s a better starting point to balancing your hormones.

Where do I start?
While it might seem like a good idea to do a MASSIVE overhaul of your diet and lifestyle factors, it can be really overwhelming and unsustainable. Choosing a few areas of your life that could use some help, such as sleep, stress management, and movement can provide some good groundwork as you make other smaller, sustainable shifts. My favorite book that provides a great introduction to Functional Medicine concepts is by Dr. Mark Hyman, “The Blood Sugar Solution.” @drmarkhyman also has a fantastic podcast called “The Doctor’s Farmacy” which covers topics from our food system, to health, longevity and much more. So if you’re new to these topics and you’re still skeptical about how they could change the trajectory of your health, check these out first.
